Update: 8/27/24 – The Dripping Springs Skatepark is OPEN to the public. The City held a massive grand opening skatepark event today. Hundreds in attendance, great skating, giveaways, local food vendors and a heck of a lot of fun.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Dorian Zev Kweller Memorial Skatepark, located within Founders Park, is the direct result of the The Dripping Springs Skatepark Inc.’s efforts. Here’s a quick history. Starting back in 2014 local skateboarders knew they wanted a skatepark. In an effort to further cultivate an already-heathy skateboarding community, a weekly skate night was hosted at the Dripping Springs Ranch Park.

Fast forward 10 years, the Ranch Park Skate Night continues as strong as ever. What started out as a “let’s see what happens” type event turned into a much anticipated weekly gathering for the youth of the City. It cannot be overstated just how many friendships have been created, new tricks learned and positive things produced from one of the most reliably-attended evenings in town. It was during a few of these skate nights in 2019 that SPA Skateparks hosted the first round of two skatepark design input processes. The resulting presentation boards assisted in what would be a multi-year fundraising effort.

After hosting countless events and collecting private donations DS Skatepark Inc eventually collected over $100,000. Dripping Springs Skatepark Inc tied itself to the Dripping Springs Community Foundation, a 501c3 entity. Subsequently, the Foundation could then collect and distribute funds for the project. The passing of the Hays County parks bond in 2022 resulted in the injection of the majority of project funds. Finally, the City of Dripping Springs set aside an allowance for park amenities such as an entry sign, tables, trash receptacles, and benches.

SPA Skateparks served as the design-build skatepark contractor and Project Manager whose construction scope included land clearing, subgrade preparation, and turn-key skatepark terrain.

Skatepark Terrain

Think, plaza. In the woods. Triangular in shape, the park has an authentic street feel with 2 – 3 foot elevation changes and spaced out features. In turn, the flow is slow and provides plenty of space to control speed and set up for the trick of choice. A sidewalk from the parking lot meanders through the trees to one of two directions. One route goes directly to the skatepark and the other leads to an entry area with safe viewing and seating. What makes this park stand out from others in the area is it’s simplicity and real-plaza feel. In fact, a representative of Dripping Springs Skatepark Inc flew to California and met with the New Line Skateparks (skatepark designer) team to skate and discover the exact terrain they envisioned for their new park.
