Texas City Skatepark

The park is free to the public. Grand opening was on Saturday Oct 12, 2013

Overview

Located in the heart of prized Nessler Park, the Texas City Skatepark epitomizes the process behind design-build skate park development. SPA Skateparks’ services began by assisting the City with site selection. Alongside Parks Department staff, an identified list of potential skate park sites were analyzed and scored based on a list of factors including, but not limited to, existing on-site amenities and the ease by which people can get to the park. Over the course of several skate park design input meetings, skaters and other community members presented their suggestions based on what they’d like to see regarding skate features, skate terrain types and other site-contextual items.

Texas City Skatepark Terrain

The roughly 8,000 square foot skate park includes all of the must-have skate features like rails, stair sets, quarter pipes and ledges. It also includes many features unique to the Texas City Skate Park, like two outwardly facing suspended wings spaced a few feet apart, meant to represent two blades of an oil ship’s propeller – a nod to the City’s oil refining and shipping industries. A terra-cotta and beige integral colored concrete scheme is incorporated into various skate features to not only improve the skate park’s aesthetics and skaters’ experience, but also to match the neighboring Texas City High School’s colors.

Nessler Park

Nessler Park itself is a bustling public space offering many activities for people of all ages. A system of walking trails, basketball court and baseball field, and recently renovated, state-of-the-art water park are all in the surrounding area. The skate park site has many, mature oak trees that provide much needed shade in the Summer months. The space between the trees dictated a perfect “L” shaped skate park design. Texas City is located approximately 10 minutes North of the City of Galveston and a few minutes South of the City of Houston, making it an excellent stop on your next weekend skate trip.

Skatepark General Contractor

Acting as General Contractor, SPA Skateparks’ turn-key skate park construction scope of work included a lime stabilized earthworks program, on site metal and reinforcement fabrication and all cast in place concrete work. Our professional skate park shotcrete crew and ACI Certified Shotcrete Nozzleman placed high strength concrete at high velocity on to the transitional and vertical faces of skate features.
