City of Sherman Texas Skate Park

The City of Sherman’s Hawn Skate Park is hosting a grand opening event on Friday, October 26 from 5:30pm – 10pm.  More photos will be posted soon.

DESCRIPTION

In early 2018 SPA Skateparks was selected as the design-build skatepark contractor for the City of Sherman, Texas Hawn Park Skate Park. Project scope includes community consultation, full design and specifications sealed by registered professional and turn key construction services. The skatepark is a complete renovation of the previous city skatepark located at the same site. The City demolished the flat slab in preparation of earthworks. Earthworks consisted of cut-and-fill operations with imported select fill material. Construction duration was less than two months and was completed in September, 2018.

The site already had a full skatepark lighting system which has been updated to accommodate the new skatepark positioning and design. The City installed grass sod and seed, repositioned benches and installed trash receptacles. A water fountain, restroom and parking lot are next to the skatepark.

SKATEPARK TERRAIN

The skatepark has two main elevations. The bottom level includes a pump bump and 3.5 ft tall mini ramp. The upper section is 2 ft higher and incorporates a flat rail, stair set, hubba, down rail, turn-around quarter pipe and london gap. Skatepark photos and design images are posted on this page. Below is a listing of features within the Sherman Hawn Park Skatepark:

HISTORY & MASTER PLAN

The City of Sherman has had a skatepark within Hawn Park for decades. The first iteration was a metal, prefabricated assembly of skate ramps on a flat concrete slab. In 2002 a few of the metal features were replaced with concrete modular skate ramps. Years later, both the ramps and concrete slab became unfit for use and posed a potential safety issue. In recognizing the skatepark’s high usage and request from the community for the facility to remain open, the City allocated funds for the entire project. The newly constructed project has been developed as a site specific, poured in place concrete skatepark. Doing so will maximize the project’s life and City’s return on investment. No doubt skateboarders, scooters and bikers from the North Texas area will make a detour on their next road trip to visit Sherman’ Hawn Park Skatepark.
